Proverbs 3:5-6

Proverbs 3:

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.

This passage has been calling out to me this week and I wanted to share with you all. It has brought me peace and given me understanding why we should not rely on anyone or anything other than the Word of God when it comes to seeking guidance.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart

What’s interesting to me about this passage is the use of the word, “Trust”. To me, trust comes after faith. In order to have trust, you must first have faith. When used in this passage, it is supposed that we already have faith, strong faith in God. Meditating on this first line of the verse restores my faith that there is no one out there besides God that I can fully and wholeheartedly put my trust in…that requires deep faith.

and lean not on your own understanding;

Self-sufficiency and self-dependence have been the ruin of mankind ever since the fall of Adam. We are simply incapable of understanding God’s will, we walk by faith, not by sight.

in all your ways submit to him

The KJV of this line is, “In all thy ways acknowledge him” which works well with the NIV version quoted above. When I meditate on this verse, I find that in order to submit to Him, you have to acknowledge that He is in control and by not submitting, then you are not truly acknowledging.

and he will make your paths straight.

If you’ve ever been in a strange town and used a GPS, then this should be easy to illustrate. God will show us the way and direct us if we follow this advice and pray. We must pray and seek wisdom from God but also be willing to listen…even if it means abandoning our plans that we feel are based on good intentions. Good intentions don’t always equal God intentions…read, pray, meditate AND listen! He knows where we need to go and what we need to do to place us in a position for the much needed blessings we seek.
